چکیده

The relationship between surface production and benthic standing stock is fundamental to understanding biogeography in the deep sea. While much has been learned about the complex oceanographic processes involved in energy transfer to the benthos on local scales, the correspondence of overhead production to benthic community structure on regional scales remains poorly characterized. We compiled a database on the biomass and abundance of deep-sea macrobenthos in the western North Atlantic collected from 1961 to 1985. Using SeaWiFS satellite color imagery, we calculated POC from surface chlorophyll a concentrations (from 1997 to 2001), and estimated POC flux to the seafloor by using the empirically derived Pace et al. [1987. Primary production, new production and vertical flux in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Nature 325, 803–804] algorithm. The standing stock and surface production data are not concurrent, but their basic geographic trends at these very large spatial scales appear to be relatively stable over the time scales of measurement. Estimated POC flux at depth accounts for 62–67% of the variance ðPo0:0001Þ in benthic standing stock, suggesting that macroecological studies of the relationship between satellite-derived surface production and deep-sea community structure may be possible. r 2007 Elsevier Ltd. The influence of Atlantic-Eurasian teleconnection patterns on temperature regimes in South Caspian Sea coastal areas: a study of Golestan Province, North Iran

The main objective of this study was to reveal the impact of nine climate indices on temperature changes and climate oscillations in Golestan Province along the southern coast of the Caspian Sea. Climate indices data from across the Atlantic-Eurasian sector were collected from the NCEP/NCAR, the Climate Prediction Centre (CPC) and the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) over a period of 40 years (1971...

The Effects of North Atlantic Oscillation on the atmospheric middle level Anomaly and precipitation of Iran.Case study: west of Iran.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the North Atlantic Oscillation on the middle levels of Atmosphere and precipitation changes in the West of country. To do this, first monthly rainfall data of 17 synoptic stations of the West Country in period of 30 years from 1984 to 2014 of country were collected from Meteorological Organization. As well as North Atlantic Oscillation...

Large Spatial Scale Variability in Bathyal Macrobenthos Abundance, Biomass, α- and β-Diversity along the Mediterranean Continental Margin

The large-scale deep-sea biodiversity distribution of the benthic fauna was explored in the Mediterranean Sea, which can be seen as a miniature model of the oceans of the world. Within the framework of the BIOFUN project ("Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning in Contrasting Southern European Deep-sea Environments: from viruses to megafauna"), we investigated the large spatial scale variabilit...
